Help us capture vital data about our ancient climate, biodiversity, and evolution.

In order to better study the diversity and abundance of the species from all parts of the basin we have photographed our entire collection of brachiopods from the Cretaceous deposits of Skåne. This collection consists of 35 drawers containing an estimated 5000 specimens.

Now we need your help to capture the large amounts of information that are contained on the specimen labels. This will provide us with valuable insight into this ancient ecosystem.

This collection is unique in two ways: first, it provides insights into a habitat that is rarely preserved in the fossil record, and second, in the North Atlantic Ocean such large brachiopods just don’t live in the intertidal zone anymore – they are nowadays found mostly in the deep sea! Understanding this ecosystem will provide important new insights into the nature of the Cretaceous oceans.” – Steffen Kiel, senior scientist, Swedish Museum of Natural History, Department of Paleobiology.
